Search engine what? Notes on a billion-dollar industry

Search engine optimization is one of those lurking industries that quietly topped the billion-dollar mark only a few years after they gained ground. Its growth is impressive considering it remains a backroom practice, instilled into the wiles of edgier businesses and eluding staunchly luddite entrepreneurs. Yet, even as mom-and-pop products and services are quaint mainstays of modern economies, the resort to modern and Web-based business promotions keeps increasing over the years. In 2012, the industry is worth more than USD20 billion.

Growth forecasts are even more bullish as the key results for search engine tools are redefined. Before, the one-track vision of netting more customers from appearances in search results drove SEO strategies. Businesses matured alongside this development; consequently, clientele and competitors became increasingly wired. The traditional marketplace lodged its humdrum into the Internet, and search results were vendors’ hawk cries.

The noise from the melee was both injurious and affirmative to businesses. Since traffic is already there, Web marketers now strobed reputation and brand management. It’s the fish vendor all over again, weaning himself from sticky word of mouth about his catch. Driving traffic to specific products and services is becoming secondary to winning the image game, and generating industry staying power in turn.

As a result, the new functions of SEO --- that of building up products and services and cleaning out bad raps --- make it seem a standard public relations module. Many practitioners embrace this new job description, believing it allows the industry to transcend either the wisdom of crowds or the stupidity of the masses by a search result click.

Armed to the teeth with social networks: No website is an island

If interconnectivity online means having to be repetitive, then businesses can’t do better than rid themselves of self-consciousness. Online presence, the ethos of Web marketing, is a nag. It’s a surround-bandwidth experience for target markets that follow the same businesses across several social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. The latter are only too happy to create advertising-friendly environs, which nudge the value of their stocks upward.

SEOP Image Credit: sitecoresnippets.blogspot.com

One can imagine how this might be a problem, but it isn’t. There have been complaints of ad swamping in single social networks, but consumers are not likely to mind seeing the same promotions on Twitter as on Facebook. These two social networks were clever enough to chuck ubiquitous ads in their inception and hand the power of subscribing to brand marketing strategies over to their members. It’s like giving TV watchers the push button for ads they want to see, as opposed to imposing them over uniform air space.

Established brands also know better than to pester their markets. While their websites need to be connected to the social networks to receive attention, as well as have complementary social network pages to audit consumer feedback and facilitate customer service, each of their updates is borne of strategies. The main objective is to lure, and they’ll do so with persuasive material. Viral video and photo ads are big productions with aesthetic value and mass sensibility. They’re also the kind of entertainment the consumerist social network generation would want to see.

One common misconception about blogs is that they don’t get as much traffic as websites. The truth is, blogs are more trusted and frequented by consumers because they are deemed to offer more realistic, "unpaid" evaluations on products and services. Knowing this, bloggers have begun to employ search engine optimization techniques to gain subscribers. While this has been effective, some bloggers overdo it, applying every SEO strategy available.

With their Thematic Optimization™, SEOP helps clients sell products and services with maximum revenue.

The truth is, bloggers need not be an SEO expert to succeed in high Google rankings; they simply need to apply the appropriate techniques:

• Using community-generated keywords: The key to appearing in the top Google results is tagging search terms that visitors actually use.
• Optimizing permalinks: Bloggers often leave their hosting site to assign the URL to their posts without realizing that their site and post’s URLs also double as keyword holders for search engine crawlers. By inserting keywords in blog post URLs, blogs are further optimized.
• Using a straightforward blog theme: Design is important in capturing subscriber attention, but the easier visitors can navigate a blog, the quicker Google can build links to relate keywords to a blog’s content.

By selecting the SEO techniques suitable for a blog and audience, bloggers can optimize their sites at low to no cost with immediate results.

Building an image: SEOP and putting the team together

SEOP, a global online marketing firm, has mastered the intricate manner by which search engine optimization operates. By the same token, the firm is also aware of how massive the undertaking could be. Beyond strategic thinking, execution is the greater challenge that demands specific skills, talents, and specialization.

Experts from different fields and aspects of Internet marketing are needed to run an SEO campaign. From area strategists to content creators and web developers, people are needed to build well-oiled SEO machineries. This does not mean, of course, that a company ought to hire every fresh talent that appears at its doorstep. SEOP believes in finding people with the proper set of skills to drive a campaign forward.

Companies with enough wherewithal could easily partner with other SEO firms and rely on its resources. Some choose to hire from within their own teams—content creators and web developers are common stock even in traditional media marketing firms. However, most firms find it necessary to hire people with specific skill sets. After all, it is still best to hire people with definite SEO experience, or those who will need minimum training upon entry. For instance, seasoned SEO writers could cope better with the campaign’s demands than a novelist in search for a new career. In the same vein, managers, link builders, and analysts form the integral structure of maximizing a campaign where experience has a definite advantage.

Mobile and traditional SEO: SEOP lists their differences

The advent of wireless Internet connection makes it possible for people to access the Web even when they’re away from their computers. According to SEOP, a search engine optimization services provider, this presents a huge opportunity for businesses to reach more people and drive traffic to their brand by creating a mobile Web counterpart to their websites – and this mobile website must be well optimized for search engines.

SEOP | Image credit: bkv.com

In developing a mobile website, site owners and SEO practitioners must be aware of the differences between mobile and traditional SEO:

Search behavior. People’s search behaviors change when they shift from using their computer to using their smartphones and tablets. The main reason behind this is the size of the device used for mobile surfing – people look for more convenient ways of conducting their online search. SEOP states that instead of going to Google.com to type in their search terms, mobile surfers (1) use Google, Bing, or Yahoo’s search apps, (2) use visual search engines like Google Goggles and Yahoo Axis, and (3) speak directly to the device for Google Voice or Siri to do their searches.

SEOP | Image credit: apple.com

Search algorithms and indexing. Search engines, such as Google, have set different search algorithms for indexing and evaluating both desktop and mobile websites – Googlebot for the former and Googlebot-Mobile for the latter. Websites that are meant for desktop browsing may not properly render when accessed through a smartphone, so Googlebot-Mobile may not be able to index it, making the website rank low in the SERPs. This highlights the significance of creating a mobile site that’s fully optimized for the mobile interface.

User experience requirements. The smaller screens of smartphones and tablets limit how people navigate through a mobile site. To enrich user experience, SEOP recommends adding buttons and links that are thumbable, and having on-site elements available so the mobile surfer no longer has to scroll down. By structuring the site’s interface and navigation for easy mobile surfing, large bounce rates and low search rankings can be avoided.

SEOP: Googling Google

Google is the search engine-temple. SEO companies such as SEOP derive 90% of their work’s worth in Google. Its predominance as a search engine, easily edging out competitors like Yahoo and Bing, has gone as far as to make it a verb.

SEOP™ | Image credit: googinvestor.blogspot.com

Google is therefore the Internet age’s equivalent of TV airspace for commercials. SEO practices are tailor-made to achieve Google visibility for the promotion of businesses and individuals. This is attributed to the scope of Google’s servers and the algorithms it deploys to classify and rank content.

SEO experts have remarked over the years how Google has been evolving, with some contending it’s all for the better. During its infancy, SEO had served the simplistic corporate drive for marketing visibility. SEOP, at one point, admits this as a core strategy of SEO. But with changes in Google’s platform, and the way people conduct searches, SEO operations need to readjust its methods.

SEOP™ | Image credit: blogs.ebrandz.com

Spreading across the industry is a drive to improve the optimization process by integrating relevance to search results. This means much more than having a specific entity’s search result ranking up there. Google’s new approach to Internet searches means to speak more to end-users than simply draw them in by keyword hypnosis.

The rise of user-generated content is also a glimpse of how interactive Internet marketing should be. SEO firms and specialists are not the sole kingmakers on the Internet, but users themselves who promote and support specific industries through their online activities in social media platforms and their personal blogs. Google will be paying more attention to these citizen optimizers.

SEOP and crowdsourcing: Take one from the masses

SEOP Image Credit: cache.techiemania.com

SEOP, a global leader in Internet marketing and search engine optimization (SEO), adheres to the idea that two heads are better than one—but more heads would be best. The concept of crowdsourcing rests on this principle: to solve a problem, take ideas from various sources of information and choose the one that will produce the best results. Instead of outsourcing specific organizations, information is taken from an undefined number of people interested in a topic at hand.

SEOP Image Credit: cooltownstudios.com

Crowdsourcing involves blasting the problem from a single source, and then allowing responses to come in for solutions. Virtually anyone can contribute to the creation of content, outcome prediction, and informational organization. These are three categories in which crowdsourcing practices are involved. SEOP believes that crowdsourcing can help empower any SEO campaign.

SEOP Image Credit: europarl.europa.eu

Creating a venue for discussions involving any of the three categories of crowdsourcing will increase traffic and draw attention to the website. For sites focusing on creation, it is often not just for content. They likewise focus on product creation. This means allowing visitors to vote, comment, or make suggestions on what products the owning company should develop or sell.

Other sites focus on predictions and this often involves drawing conclusions based on recommendations or votes from visitor of the sites. Other methods of collaboration, such as running virtual fund by creating superior mutual funds collaboratively, are also an example of crowdsourcing for prediction.

Organization by crowdsourcing basically allows users to share information across a variety of interests. Often, the material with most votes of approval is the one that will rank first. Organization lies in the presence of similar interests.

SEOP.com: How feature articles and interviews can build online authority

SEOP.com has over 12 years of experience in the digital marketing arena. The company offers search engine optimization and marketing solutions to clients from different industries across the globe.

SEOP Photo Credit: 1.bp.blogspot.com

Getting the attention of readers is the first step in generating Web traffic. The book Killer Web Content states that Web content has been an undervalued asset. During the early years of the Internet, websites focused on the technical and visual design. However, as it progressed, experts came to know the importance of quality content.

SEOP Photo Credit: earnnews24.com

In the blogosphere, content may not only pertain to the ability of the writers to keep their readers interested through their own articles alone, it may also require the influence of other people who are being looked up to in the World Wide Web.

SEOP.com identified this technique as “bringing in the experts.” In an article published in its website, the company stated that getting noted experts and celebrities from the same industry can boost a blog’s online authority. This can be done through guest blogging or interviews.

When doing collaborative projects like guest blogging, it is important that the blogger is in the same niche or industry, so as not to defeat the purpose of tapping the right market.

Moreover, an interview is a good way to deliver valuable information to readers, especially if the interviewee has ample knowledge about the field or issues that are to be discussed. Through this, websites do not only get the attention of the readers, but also gives attention to them by relaying facts that can be of use to their work or life in general.

SEOP: Ruling the blogosphere

From SEOP™ Power To Grow

With the advent of social media and the subsequent growth of the blogosphere, SEOP understands that to stick out in the ever-expanding world of blogging, individuals and companies alike must take the initiative to make their blogs just a little bit more different to help them show up where their readers are looking.

Back in the early days of blogging, getting seen was as easy. With little competition, blogs can be spotted quickly using a search engine. This is no longer the case. In the highly competitive world of the blogosphere, where blogs on every conceivable topic imaginable continually emerge, gaining the attention and respect of the readers is a daunting task. Businesses could establish themselves as authorities in their niche if they have a solid online presence in the blogosphere.

SEOP photo credit: flickr.com/photos/cogdog

SEOP lists down a number of suggestions to help companies and their blogs gain authority in the blogging space:

1. Companies, particularly small businesses, should stick to their particular niche market. Campaign bloggers can opt for a broader range of topics, but it is suggested that topics should be chosen from those that are currently in-demand.

2. The content created should be knowledgeable, accurate, and consistent. Readers are attracted to content that has value.

3. The blog should aim to attract the attention of its target market.

4. Experts should be brought on occasion for interviews to provide authoritative content online.
